4 Day Course – 16th -19th November
This course will look at the history of pockets as worn by both men and women, using garments from the School collection. We will focus on pockets stitched into coats, petticoats, waistcoats, hose and breeches and pocket bags worn tied around the waist and make samples of several types. We will also look in detail at 18th century pocket hoops – a dual purpose item of dress worn to hold out a woman’s skirts at the sides, while also providing them with pocket bags to keep small items in. Using a pattern taken from one in the Bayerisches National Museum, that will feature in the forthcoming Patterns of Fashion 5, students will make a toile and work samples of the construction techniques of a pocket hoop.
