5 Day Course – 14th – 18th February
Stays are one of the garments with the most complicated construction and are probably one of the most challenging to reproduce today. In the18th century, they were made by specialised tailors that could create different models using a variety of techniques and materials. Students will examine extant stays from the school’s collection to learn about the reinforcing elements and inner layers usually hidden behind the lining. Using unpublished material, each student will draft pattern, make a toile to fit on a model and work a sampler with the correct materials and sewing techniques.
