400 YEARS OF BONING FOR BODIES, STAYS, CORSETS & BODICES
2-Day Course – Friday 6th & Saturday 7th December 2024
Using extant examples of these garments from the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries in our School collection, together with reconstructed bodies, stays and corsets, this course will explore the use of different materials for stiffening and shaping.
Students will make a sampler with short lengths of bents, baleen strips, feather boning, steel boning, polyester rigilene and crin.
Garments available for close observation include a pair of mid-17th century silk velvet smooth covered stays and a Vivienne Westwood corset draped in white Chantilly lace.
