FROM DOUBLET & HOSE TO THE 3-PIECE SUIT c.1620-1720
2-Day Course – FRIDAY 15th & SATURDAY 16th November
At the beginning of the 17th century, doublet and hose were the favoured garments for men in the Western world, as they had been in the previous decades. The 17th century brought a fundamental change in men’s fashion. It saw the development of the three-piece suit, which is still in use to this day, albeit with trousers rather than breeches. This course looks at how this development came about, or if it was a royal decision that led to it.
Extant examples of 17th and early 18th century textiles, ribbons, lace, embroidery and buttons will be in the classroom for students to study, as well as reconstructed doublets, coats and breeches and some of Janet Arnold’s patterns for Patterns of Fashion 7, which is being prepared for publication in 2025.
