FROM JACKS TO JUMPS: QUILTING IN GARMENTS c.1400-1800 30th NOVEMBER & 1st DECEMBER
Clothing could be quilted for both warmth and protection. Many types of garments and accessories were quilted, from headwear to doublets to bedgowns. Quilting and padding also gave form, smoothing out irregularities over the body, or creating a stylish shape. Whether hidden under armour or within a multi-layered garment, or visible and highly decorative, quilting was always functional and frequently fashionable.
Students will learn how the various methods developed over the centuries, how they were applied and who made them, and work a selection of techniques. Extant examples of quilting and reconstructed garments from the School’s collection will be available for close study.
2-Day Course – 10am to 6pm – with a vegetarian lunch and drinks included.
