HEAT-STAMPING & SCORING DESIGNS ON TEXTILES FOR GARMENTS c.1450-1650
1-Day Course – Saturday 23rd November
Stamped patterns embellished both men’s and women’s clothing, either worked as a border or covering the whole textile surface. Documents from the early modern period record textiles with a velvet pile and pattern of this kind as ‘mockado’, suggesting that they were in some way considered versions of the more highly-esteemed cut and uncut woven velvets.
The technique is relatively quick to apply, as it was in the Renaissance, and is therefore useful for the reconstruction and historical interpretation of dress today.
This course looks at the different styles and techniques of heat-stamping and students will work samples on wool and silk textiles using both extant and reconstructed examples from the School’s collection as a guide with appropriate tools.
