Obi are an essential part of wearing a kimono and can even exceed a kimono in price.
The obi has evolved in how it is tied, where it is worn on the body, its size as well as the myriad of materials and surface techniques used in its construction.
The way it is tied is not solely for functionality but is also used as another layer to signify formality of the occasion, the wearer’s status, style and taste of the wearer.
We will look at different obi examples in the School’s collection and students will make and tie a half-scale obi using pattern and construction books from our library.
